“He belts her”, “She is scared to voice her opinion because he gets violent with her”, “He is very short tempered especially with his wife”……I was shocked….totally numb…… actually speechless during this conversation. Seriously, I had no idea how to react about it. It’s not that I was listening about domestic violence for the first time but because it was about someone I know personally as a socially well behaved so called gentleman & his wife.
This discussion between some of my friends which I was a part of, made me to think about this issue.
Why does this happen? What makes a person so violent? Is this the dirty game of power? Is it to prove that I’m stronger than you? Where does the love vanishes for which they were once united?
I know there can’t be one common answer to my questions. Each relationship has its own different story.
But there are few sensible approach that can bring a difference. It may be not the cure but a step towards it.
SPEAK OUT: No, silence is not going to help at all. Voice up your thoughts either to the assailant or to someone near & dear to you.
Communication is a powerful tool that you own. Use it before it’s late.
DON’T COMPROMISE: We often hear advices such as – Just compromise for sometime, have kids & gradually everything will be sorted. Sadly, it isn’t even close to a solution. You’re in return including knowingly another new life into the mess! What example are you going to set in front of your child if the problems, fights persists? Before even you think of starting a family, think again…
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Every country has its own law against such anti social activity. No matter where you are, try to take sometime & educate yourself about it. Taking legal help sounds a big step, but it’s worth it. After all you have all the rights to save your life & spend the rest wisely without any scars.
BE A MAN:
A relationship isn’t complete without mutual friendship, where two people decide to spend the rest of their lives connected with the bridge of love & compassion. If this is exactly what’s missing in that relationship, inspite of several attempts to save it, then what’s the use of being in it?
That’s really sad when these things happen na!! Now if only women were not scared to voice it out !!

More than freedom from this kind of thing, women are afraid of what society will say , and continue to go through the torture, I really wish they could see past beyond this and the harm they are doing to themselves 😦

Posts like these are filled with positivity.. Yes.. Women need to know their rights& men too..
When there is violence irrespective of the gender.. We need to shout it out…
Women & men.. Need to get over the taboo and stigmas associated with domestic violence..
The worst part in these cases?? The victim feels ashamed.. 😔😔 How contrary isn’t it??
Good job in dedicating a post to such an issue shweta!!

Ty Noorain. Also, I have spoken about only women here because that’s what I heard of. Though I’m aware that domestic violence hasn’t spared any gender! That’s really sad:(

It’s so sad and at the same time so frustrating that violence against women is still rampant all around the world. Many women are scared to come out and talk about it especially because it involves a loved one. Great post Shweta! Loved the way you have listed a bunch of points as to what can be done against it!! 👍👍

I have never understood people who take violence. I don’t know what it is or how they do that? Like you mentioned, is it the power, or the upbringing or whatever may be reasons be, violence is never the answer to anything, ever.
It boils me up inside when I hear things like these.
Yes, people should speak out, take a chance and fight for what’s right, their freedom.
I hope all this changes and people, women would never have to live in fear.

Well spoken, Shweta. It pains me to see how domestic violence is treated as an unfortunate consequence of disharmony in relationships. It should treated for what it is – a severe crime that should lead to legal repercussions. I think women would speak out more if they were sure that the country would listen.

Very powerful message, Shweta. Men sometimes misunderstand the whole point of “being a man”.
